Free rides for a day

A drunken driver kills someone every 52 minutes.

If he or she is lucky enough to get caught before that, the cost of a DWI charge is around $16,000.

With those U.S. Department of Transportation and AAA statistics in mind, a Los Angeles-based rideshare service wants to target suburbanites who drive for city night life.
The service, BeMyDD, will make like Edgar Winter and offer free rides to Gaston County residents.

The offer applies to people who live within 50 miles of Charlotte’s city center and is valid between 9 p.m. and 2 a.m. Dec. 5.

BeMyDD says it provides screened, insured drivers with 10 years of experience to people who need a designated driver. People who use the smartphone app order a team of two drivers, one to drive the customer’s car home and the other to pick up the first driver.

The service may bring to mind ridesharing companies like Uber and Lyft.

BeMyDD could fill a void left by Uber in our area. The company’s coverage map of Charlotte shows the service’s main customers live east of Mount Holly and Belmont.

In January, the Mothers Against Drunk Driving advocacy group, with Uber, released a study that showed services like Uber are used by people during peak times for drunken driving and used near places that sell alcohol.

BeMyDD, which serves 76 markets in 31 states, has partnered with Total Wine and Jack Daniel’s parent Brown-Forman Corp. to provide the free day of service.

About five teams will be stationed around Charlotte, with at least one in Gaston County, spokeswoman Alexa Milkovich said.
