Evesham Saving Lives program extends through June

EVESHAM – The Evesham Saving Lives program has taken nearly 1,000 residents home for free after a night out of drinking over the four months of its existence, and will get to take home plenty more with an extension of the program through June 1.

Evesham and Voorhees residents will continue to be provided with free rides home seven days per week with the anti-DUI program between the hours of 9 p.m. and 2 a.m. from any liquor-serving establishment within the two towns.

Rides are provided by Uber and BeMyDD and proof of residency in either town is required.

This initiative, administered by the Evesham Celebrations Foundation, will continue to be fully funded by donations from various businesses, restaurants and donors.

Evesham Saving Lives expanded last month via a partnership with neighboring Voorhees, which kicked off a pilot program in mid-December.

Voorhees and Evesham residents can download the Evesham Police Department's smartphone app — available on Google Play and the iTunes App Store — which includes a Safe Ride feature that connects to Uber or BeMyDD.

The safe rides have led to an 83 percent reduction in the arrest of Evesham residents coming from local liquor establishment and a 55 percent reduction in overall DUI arrests.

“This has far exceeded my expectation,” Evesham Mayor Randy Brown said in a statement. “The ESL program has shown that DUIs can be reduced and should be a model for communities throughout the United States.”
