“As elected officials we believe our most important role is to keep our residents and families safe,” Mignogna said.

When someone has been drinking and decides to get behind the wheel, it affects everyone, said Ana Mahony, general manager of Uber New Jersey, so she hopes this partnership is just one of many to come.

“I couldn’t imagine a better way to end the year,” she said. “I hoped it would be a partial solution to resolving a problem and not only did it work, but other communities are using it as a model.”

To use the free program, one must be a resident of either Evesham or Voorhees, open the app for Uber or BemyDD at a participating bar or restaurant between the designated hours, put in for the ride and the township will foot the bill. Those services are available anywhere in South Jersey for a cost, which averages about $10 an Uber ride in Evesham, which Brown points out is cheaper than a DUI and something people should really take advantage of.
