Driver service aims to help shelter dogs

GREATER AKRON — Designated driver service BeMyDD (Be My Designated Driver) will help move dogs without homes to no-kill shelters through a New Year’s Eve promotion.
The PuppyLovin’ New Year’s Eve (NYE) campaign was created to rescue shelter animals at risk of euthanization, according to BeMyDD officials. The company will donate $1 from every hour of designated driver service provided Dec. 31 to help move dogs to no-kill shelters, where they can be adopted and avoid the chance of euthanasia. Contributions will be made to one or more charities to help fulfill the goals of the campaign.
“We’ve always been focused on helping to decrease drunken driving and keeping people safe on New Year’s Eve,” said Arthur Simanovsky, BeMyDD CEO and president. “This year we wanted to do even more by giving a holiday gift to those who are truly helpless and abandoned.”
According to statistics from the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, approximately 2.7 million animals are euthanized in animal shelters each year.
“With the PuppyLovin’ NYE campaign, we want to take the resources we have to help animals in danger who cannot help themselves,” Simanovsky said. “New Year’s Eve is our busiest night of the year for designated drivers, so it’s the perfect opportunity for us and our customers to support a worthy cause.”
BeMyDD is an alternative transportation service that provides professional drivers to operate vehicles belonging to impaired drivers. Instead of asking a friend to stay sober to act as a designated driver or leaving a car behind while taking a taxi home, BeMyDD allows customers to ride in their own car. Drivers are fully screened and insured, have at least 10 years of driving experience and arrive dressed in professional attire, according to company officials. Hourly rates range from $14 to $19.50.
