Bridge named to honor fallen soldier

A bridge on East West Highway over the Georgetown Branch Trail is being named in honor of a Bethesda native who died while serving his country. Sgt. Alessandro Carbonaro died from catastrophic injuries he suffered when his Humvee was hit by an improvised explosive device in Iraq in May 2006. He was 28. [WTOP]

DLC programs receive awards

The Montgomery County Department of Liquor Control received awards from the National Association of Counties for two of its programs. The first, “Be My Designated Driver,” offered professionals to drive patrons and their cars home safely at a low cost. The second targeted Bethesda businesses to try to test carding policies. The program used mystery shoppers, in their early 20s but always over the age of 21, to see if they triggered an ID check by the clerk or server. [Montgomery County Department of Liquor Control]

5 masked assailants carjack woman in Chevy Chase

D.C. police are searching for a blue Hyundai Santa Fe SUV after authorities said a woman was carjacked by five masked male assailants Sunday evening as she was unloading groceries from her vehicle in Chevy Chase. The robbery, in which one of the men or teenagers had a gun, has unnerved residents in the upscale community in Northwest Washington, D.C., where such violent crime is rare. [Washington Post]

5 finalists chosen for vacant Gaithersburg City Council seat

The Gaithersburg City Council has narrowed the selection of candidates for the council seat left vacant by the death of Henry Marraffa. Twelve people submitted applications for the position; five finalists have been selected. They are Jose Contreras, James McNulty, Yvette Monroe, James Rolfes and Laurie-Anne Sayles. Selection of the new council member will take place during a Feb. 6 executive session, with the swearing in taking place at a Feb. 8 special session. [City of Gaithersburg]
