EVESHAM TWP. — The free designated driver program started in Evesham last year will continue for another six months after officials announced its extension Friday.

The Evesham Savings Lives program will continue to give residents from Evesham, as well as Voorhees, free rides homes from bars and other drinking establishments through a partnership with Uber and BeMyDD until June 1.

Since the program started in September 2015, the program has taken nearly 1,000 people from the two towns home, officials said.

"This has far exceeded by expectations," Evesham Township Mayor Randy Brown said. "The ESL program has shown that DUIs can be reduced and should be a model for communities throughout the Unites States."

According to numbers provided by Evesham Township, there has been a 55-percent reduction in DUI arrests since the program began, including an 83-percent reduction in the arrest of township residents.

Evesham and Voorhees residents will be able to get a ride home seven days a week between the hours of 9 p.m. and 2 a.m. from any drinking establishment within those two towns. All they have to do is provide proof of residency in either township. If people are out with their cars, BeMyDD can take those home too.

The Evesham Celebration Foundation will administer the program, which will continue to be fully funded through contributions from local businesses and private donors.
